Director of ‘BAD SHABBOS’ Coming to Reading for One-Night-Only Screening

From Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks

The Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks is delighted to announce the annual Reading Jewish Film Series. This season’s series will feature four exceptional films related to Jewish life, culture, and history.

The series opens on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m., with the laugh-out-loud comedy BAD SHABBOS. In the film, David and his fiancée Meg are about to have their parents meet for the first time over a Shabbat dinner when an accidental death (or murder?) gets in the way. With Meg’s Catholic parents due any moment, this family dinner soon spirals into a hilarious disaster.

Daniel Robbins.

The film’s director, Daniel Robbins, will be in Reading to speak after the film. In his films, he takes exciting concepts and grounds them with authentic performances, surprising humor, and propulsive energy. His breakout film, PLEDGE, was a hit at the Fantasia Film Festival and was sold to IFC Midnight as well as a streaming deal with Hulu. He also won “Best Director” at Screamfest. His Borat-style comedy feature CITIZEN WEINER debuted in 2024 and is currently available for free on Tubi. His film BAD SHABBOS won the Audience Award at Tribeca. He is based in New York City.

Tickets for BAD SHABBOS include a talkback with the director, Daniel Robbins, and are $20.00, or $18.00 for seniors and students. Other film series films are $10.00, or $8.00 for the discounted rate. Tickets are available at goggleworks.org/boscov-theater/#films.

Future Reading Jewish Film Series films include:

Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. – Charles Grodin: Rebel with a Cause Raised in a Jewish household in Pittsburgh, Charles Grodin’s life embodied the concept of Tikkun Olam. The film not only celebrates Charles Grodin’s hilarious acting career, but also his remarkable, decades-long, successful fight to get wrongly convicted people – most of whom were mothers of color with young children – out of prison. The film includes interviews with Robert De Niro, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Elaine May, Carol Burnett, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Alan Arkin, Ellen Burstyn, Marc Maron, Lewis Black, Marlo Thomas, Jon Lovitz, plus several of the women Chuck got released from prison.

Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. – Among Neighbors Using live footage and stunning hand-drawn animation, Among Neighbors unearths a haunting true story of betrayal and survival. In a small Polish town, Jewish and Polish neighbors once lived in peace – until World War II shattered their community. This gripping documentary follows the only living survivor from the town and an aging eyewitness who saw Jews brutally murdered, six months after the Nazis were defeated.

Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. – Shoshana Harry Melling (Harry Potter, The Queen’s Gambit), Irina Starshenbaum, and Douglas Booth (My Salinger Year, Loving Vincent) star in a troubled love story set against the British Mandate just before the founding of the state of Israel. The film is prolific writer-director Michael Winterbottom’s passion project, 15 years in the making and based on real people and events, and tells the story of a cross-cultural relationship between a ranking member of the British Palestine Police Force and a young Jewish woman to explore the way extremism and violence push people apart, forcing them to choose sides.
