District 3 field hockey: Newport ousts defending champion Oley Valley

Defending District 3 and PIAA Class 1A champion Oley Valley was beaten in the first round of the district field hockey tournament on Wednesday, losing to Newport 2-1.

Korimae Reisinger and Addison Geer scored in the second quarter for Newport (15-4), the eighth seed in the tournament.

For ninth-seeded Oley Valley (11-10), Meghan Kelly scored in the first quarter on an assist from Cassidy Clark.

Oley had a 12-3 edge in shots.

Oley goalie Charlotte Prout made one save.

In other Class 1A games on Wednesday, sixth-seeded Wyomissing advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-1 over 11th-seeded Littlestown.

The Spartans will play third-seeded Boiling Springs at noon on Saturday at Boiling Springs.

Second-seeded Lancaster Country day ousted 15th-seeded Hamburg 3-1.

For the Hawks (12-7), Kaida Chwatek scored in the fourth quarter on an assist from Kaylee Dissinger.

Hamburg goalie Devon Frantz made 16 saves.

Fourth-seeded Susquenita eliminated 13th-seeded Berks Catholic 6-1. The Saints finish the season 10-7-1.

In Class 3A, sixth-seed Wilson cruised to a 6-1 win over 11th-seeded Ephrata as Laura Crocona scored three goals.

The Bulldogs play at third-seeded Penn Manor at 10 a.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Also in 3A, fourth-seeded Mechanicsburg ousted 13th-seeded Gov. Mifflin 8-1.

And in the Class 2A tourney, seventh-seeded Northern York beat 10th-seeded Twin Valley 3-0.
