The Wyomissing Area girls basketball team is on a mission this postseason.
The Spartans’ matchup Friday night with Susquehanna Township was another stepping stone toward their third consecutive District 3 4A title.
After heading into the half with a double-digit lead, all the Spartans needed was to secure their lead and they’d be one game closer to their goal. Wyomissing did just that with a game plan fueled by ball movement and a strong defensive presence as they’d be making their way back to the district final four again.
Wyomissing (20-2) defeated Susquehanna Township (15-8) 49-31 Friday night at Wyomissing Area Junior Senior High School Gym in the quarterfinals of the PIAA District 3 Class 4A girls basketball championships.
“They are very motivated, they don’t get it from us,” said head coach Aaron Anders. “They love playing with each other and for each other.”
The Spartans opened the game on a 9-0 run. Led by their all-conference star Amaya Stewart, the team dominated on the glass early and got out in transition for easy scores.
Defensively, they were able to start strong due to Kasey Maggs strong point of attack defense. Her communication helped the Spartans make the correct switches to force tough shots. Karly Hide also provided some strong on-ball defense.

The momentum went into Susquehanna’s favor just a tad when Maggs picked up her second foul. While the Lady Indians didn’t record a bucket until the 2:25 mark of the first quarter, they mustard up a 7-0 run to keep the game close heading to the second quarter.
“I told them to just stay the course. We have a game plan, we run the game plan, and everything else will work out,” said Anders.
After the quarterly intermissions, Wyomissing was back to its brand of basketball. Stewart finished the half just a point shy of a double-double while Maggs, Hide, and Addie Loeb provided one three piece.
Wyomissing finished the half on a 15-7 run to take a 28-17 lead going into halftime. Aaliyah Barnes kept things relatively close for Susquehanna with nine first half points, all from beyond the arc.
Susquehanna came out of the half strong with a 5-0 run including another triple from Barnes to cut the lead to six. Despite the quick surge, Wyomissing still held a nine-point advantage heading into the final period. The Spartans only scored eight points in the quarter, but it was enough to hold Susquehanna at bay. Stewart scored a crucial putback layup in the final minute to keep things in Wyomissing’s favor. She finished with 17 points, 19 rebounds, and four blocks.

To start the fourth, Alexis Hardy pushed the lead back to double-digits with a euro step layup followed up by a rebound on the other end. That rebound turned into Hyde’s second three-pointer of the game as the Spartans continued to pull away from the Lady Indians. The two would finish the game scoring nine points each.
“We’re not going to let up, we’re going to keep going at it, and keep playing Wyomissing basketball,” said Anders.

Wyomissing held a strong lead until the final buzzer, walking away with the 49-31 victory. The Spartans let up just four fourth quarter points.
Wyomissing will take on Northern Lebanon (19-3) at Northern Lebanon High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
