District 3 lacrosse rankings: Top 3 Berks girls teams heading for showdowns

Twin Valley girls lacrosse coach Courtney Kaplan isn’t afraid to venture out of Berks County to find tough competition.

It’s paid off over the years as she’s developed one of the top programs in the state in Class 2A, reaching the PIAA finals last spring before losing to four-time state champion Archbishop Carroll.

Kaplan has again loaded her schedule with teams from outside the area – Unionville, Perkiomen Valley, Radnor and Cardinal O’Hara are on this year’s schedule – but winning a BCIAA title is always the first championship any team wants before they enter district play.

This year’s BCIAA tournament should be a dandy with the Raiders, Wyomissing and Wilson again being the big guns.

We get a preview of what’s to come on April 22 when Wyomissing and Twin Valley meet in Elverson in a 7 p.m. match.

As of Saturday morning, both were undefeated with the Raiders at 6-0 and Wyomissing at 7-0.

In the District 3 power rankings, Wyomissing is in the top spot, with Twin Valley ranked fourth. Sandwiched in between them are Susquehannock (9-0) and Cocalico (8-0).

Wilson (5-4) is ranked 12th in Class 3A, the final qualifying spot for the 12-team district tournament.

Twin Valley and Wilson square off in West Lawn two days after the Twin Valley-Wyomissing match.

In other words, the week of April 21-25 will tell us a lot about where the three teams stand as the BCIAA tournament approaches – semifinals are May 8.

The only other Berks girls team in the top 12 in the district rankings in 2A is Schuylkill Valley (4-2) at 11th.

Wilson defeated Twin Valley last year in the BCIAA finals, with Twin Valley beating Wyomissing the year before.

In the District 3 boys lacrosse rankings, Twin Valley, Wyomissing and Berks Catholic would all qualify for the district tournament in 2A as it stands right now.

The Raiders (7-2) are ranked fourth, the Spartans (6-4) are seventh and the Saints (4-3) are 10th.

In Class 3A, Wilson (8-1) is ranked fourth, with Exeter (4-3) on the bubble in the 13th spot.

The District 3 tournament in both classes for boys and girls starts on Friday, May 16.
