Berks athletes won four field events Friday on the first day of the District 3 Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University and added two titles in the 3200-meter run.
Muhlenberg senior Kyle Archie, in his first season of competition, won the Boys 3A high jump in 6-8.
In the discus, Brady Mider of Berks Catholic won with a throw of 176-5, with Exeter’s Josiah Newman-Kegerise second in 171-2. Mider is the defending district and state champion in the shot put and competes in that event today.
Reading High junior Xavier Beatty won the 3A boys long jump with a leap of 23-9.
Beatty was in second place behind Mark Bridgeford of Milton Hershey heading into the sixth and final round but popped his winning jump. He was in second place at 22-9¾. Bridgeford was second in 23-4½.
Schuylkill Valley’s Luke Martinez won the 2A boys pole clearing 13-0.
Martinez made 13-0 on his second attempt and Camp Hill’s Liam Murphy and Greenwood’s Levi Lower made the height on their third attempt. All three missed at 13-6, giving Martinez the gold medal.

On the track, Wyomissing’s Adie Cohen won the 2A 3200-meter run in 11:24.90 and her teammate on the boys team, David Giles won the 2A boys race in 9:34.0. Oley Valley’s Ryan Gourley was second in 9:37.96.
The top two finishers in each event in 2A, along with athletes who better the state qualifying mark qualify for the PIAA Championships next weekend at Shippensburg.
In 3A in District 3, the top five finishers and others beating the state qualifying standard advance.
The state pole vault field is determined by a different formula, but Martinez automatically qualifies as a district winner.
In the girls 3A 3200, Gov. Mifflin senior Kaitlyn Highduch earned a trip to the state meet by finishing third in 10:42.65.
In the boys 3200, Schuylkill Valley’s Aiden Konetsky placed fifth in 9:42.24, bettering the state qualifying mark and in 3A Gov. Mifflin’s Zack Zerbe was fifth in 9:21,97.
Martinez also qualified for the state meet in the 2A triple jump with a distance of 43-5 for second place.
Twin Valley freshman Addison Nudy cleared 5-5 in the 3A girls high jump for second place and a trip back to Shippensburg next weekend.
Wilson sophomore Maddie Henne placed fourth in the 3A discus with a throw of 120-7 to better the state qualifying standard.
Wyomissing junior Max Tipton placed second in the 2A shot put at 50-2 to punch a ticket to the state meet.
The meet concludes today.
