Donovan Gingrich helps West Reading All-Stars gain split of doubleheader

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Donovan Gingrich scored a tiebreaking layup with seven seconds left, sending the West Reading All-Stars a 51-48 victory over Whitney (CA) High School Friday night.

Andrew Galantuomo dribbled down the right side and passed to Gingrich, a recent Conrad Weiser graduate, who scored to break a 48-48 tie in West Reading’s first game in the Sheldon Franklin Basketball Jam at Franklin High School.

The tournament is part of the annual West Reading-Sacramento Cultural Exchange, which began in 1972.

Brendan Gaines (Daniel Boone) stole Whitney’s inbound pass and was fouled. He sealed the victory by making 1-of-2 free throws with two seconds to go.

Galantuomo (Gov. Mifflin) scored a team-high 14 points, Zack Suski (Berks Catholic) had 10 and Gaines had nine.

In the second game, West Reading fell behind Christian Brothers High School of Sacramento by as many as 13 points before its rally came up short in a 66-65 overtime loss.

West Reading used its defense to pressure Christian Brothers and took advantage of eight technical fouls on its opponent to get back in it.

West Reading had a chance to win in regulation, but it missed five late free throws and three more in overtime.

Gingrich and Danny Fleischood (Wyomissing) led West Reading with 12 points apiece.

West Reading will continue pool play Saturday with two more games.
