Downtown Reading will be the scene Saturday of two colorful and fun family events.
The city will host its first ColorFest Block Party in conjunction with a Color Run presented by web-based Nemesis Fitness.
“Get ready for an explosion of color, creativity, and community spirit,” city officials said in their announcement of the event.
This is the fourth year the locally-owned fitness company is bringing its free 5K run to the city’s streets.
“The run is untimed,” said Maritza Loiaza, city core manager, “so really it is good for all fitness levels.”
Suitable for all ages and abilities, the 5K will kick off and conclude at a block party in the 500 block of Penn Street.
Run participants will start out wearing white T-shirts and will be doused in colorful powders as they make their way on a course through downtown Reading.
“Everyone leaves in white shirts and everybody comes back very colorful,” Loiaza said.
The companion events are aimed at bringing residents and visitors together for a day of fun, fitness, creativity and festivity, officials said.
“The ColorFest Block Party promises a day packed with activities for everyone to enjoy,” officials said.
The block party will feature:
- Music by DJ Henry Houdini to keep the energy high throughout the day.
- The chance to help create a collaborative community mural under the guidance of local artist Theron Cook.
- Food and beverages from local vendors including Pagoda City Brewing and CasaW Distillery.
- Vendors and community stands with information and activities from the Goggleworks Center for the Arts, Reading Rebels, Oak Street Health, the YMCA and others
- Family-friendly activities including bounce houses, slides, photo booths, face painting and bubble stations.
“Come, celebrate, and color your world at the Downtown Reading ColorFest Block Party and Nemesis Fitness Color Run,” the city said. “It’s an event you won’t want to miss. Join us for a celebration that promises to be as vibrant and dynamic as our community.”
The Saturday block party will take place in lieu of a July first Friday event.
