Exeter will induct 14 members of the 1981 girls cross country team into its athletic hall of fame on Friday night, the school announced Wednesday.
Coach Donald Bickel will be inducted alongside 13 athletes from the 1981 team: Rose (Kane) Cooley, Rochelle (Graffius) Frebel, Michelle (Barron) Gaul, Kathy (Barron) Evans, Stephanie (Klonis) Sarge, Rebecca Lucey, Sue (Enoch) Yatron, Gloria (Garber) Anyan, Selena (Hand) Ehert, Audrey Faber, Rhonda (Johnson) Berry, Steph Butcher and Denise DeRenzo.
“They were a pleasure to coach and I enjoyed coaching them,” Bickel said in a press release. “They were great girls.”
The induction ceremony will take place on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the high school’s main gymnasium in conjunction with the boys basketball game between Exeter and Wilson. A reception honoring the inductees will be held prior to the game at 5:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
After a 10-0 regular season, the Eagles won Berks and District 3 titles in 1981 before finishing as the PIAA runners-up. At the District 3 championships, Lucey won an individual title.
“You need two things to make it a successful team — you need to have fun and every runner has to give 100 percent,” Bickel said. “All the girls on this team definitely did this.”
