Family displaced after fire damages home in Reading

A home in Reading was rendered unlivable Friday afternoon after a fire damaged the structure, city fire officials said.

Initial calls came in about 3:00 p.m. reporting smoke pouring from a two-and-a-half story building on the 100 block of Oley Street.

Crews deployed one-line and managed to contain the blaze to the first floor, said Jeremy Searfoss, Reading fire marshal.

Two adults and four children were able to evacuate safely, although one cat died in the blaze, Searfoss noted.

“The house is unlivable at this point,” Searfoss said.

He said crews had the fire out within 30 minutes, and no firefighters were harmed in the operation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and a damage estimate was unavailable Friday evening.
