Running back Gage Moyer had 188 yards and four touchdowns to lead Fleetwood to a 43-27 victory over the Schuylkill Valley in a Berks Football League Section 2 game Friday at Leesport.
Fleetwood received the ball to start, but after a quick three-and-out, Schuylkill Valley (1-2, 2-5) took over at its 34. After an initial first down, Dominic Giuffre ran for 50 yards to the Fleetwood 4 to set up a 4-yard TD run by Jake Stelluti to it 6-0 after a missed extra point.
Quarterback Tanner Maddocks got Fleetwood (2-2, 4-3) going on its next possession. On third down at the Tigers’ 31, Maddocks hurled a deep pass to a streaking Will Ryan, who caught the ball in stride and almost broke away for a touchdown before being tackled at the Schuylkill Valley 15.
Then, on third-and-2 from the 7, Maddocks ran a read option into the end zone. The Tigers were unable to convert the two-point attempt leaving the score tied at 6-6.
With the score tied at 6-6 and 5:05 left in the first quarter, Schuylkill Valley coach Bruce Harbach went to a two-quarterback system as senior Drew Campbell and junior Michael Goad took turns behind center. The decision allowed Goad and Campbell to keep the Tigers off balance through a mix of delayed handoffs and quarterback draws.
After a few big runs and three first downs, the Panthers scored on a 1-yard sneak from Campbell. Schuylkill Valley converted a two-point conversion pass from Goad to Dimitri Aletras to go up 14-6.
Schuylkill Valley went up 21-6 with 8:58 left in the second quarter when Campbell found Kyle Spotts for a 4-yard touchdown pass.
The Tigers responded with a 69-yard drive, converting twice on fourth down, capped by 2-yard touchdown run by Moyer. The drive lasted 8:34 and the two-point conversion cut the Tigers’ deficit to 21-14.
Fleetwood struck first in the third quarter when Moyer took a first-down run from the Tigers’ 5-yard line 95 yards straight up the middle for a score with 7:26. Fleetwood would convert for two again on a handoff to running back Gavin Morris to give Fleetwood their first lead at 22-21.
On the next drive, the Panthers were faced with a third-and-long. Campbell threw a deep pass in the direction of Spotts that was intercepted by Maddocks and taken back to the Panthers’ 38 yard.
Moyer scored his third touchdown of the night from the 5-yard line with 1:20 to go in the third. The two-point conversion keeper by Maddocks made it 30 -21.
In the fourth, Goad scored on a 3-yard run for the Panthers, but Fleetwood answered on the next drive as Maddocks scored on a draw from the Schuylkill Valley 3-yard.
Moyer added another TD with 2:36 left in the game.
Goad rushed for 67 yards as well as a touchdown, while Giuffre compiled 135 rushing yards on fifteen carries.
