Maddocks helps Fleetwood beat Hamburg in high school football

Fleetwood defeated Hamburg 28-26 thanks to contributions from Tanner Maddocks on both sides of the ball Friday night in a Berks Football League Section 2 game at Hamburg.

The Tigers scored first on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Maddocks to Landon Tomes in the first quarter. Maddocks was perfect on the scoring drive, completing five passes for 64 yards.

Hamburg (1-3, 5-3) scored a touchdown of its own just four minutes later on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Xander Menapace. The play was set up by a 31-yard run by Mason Pierce on the previous play. The run was Mason’s longest of the game. He finished with seven carries for 75 yards and one reception for 8 yards.

Fleetwood (3-2, 5-3) scored again on its next possession, thanks to another touchdown toss by Maddocks. Maddocks found Tristan McFarland for a 5-yard touchdown to put the Tigers up 14-6 just before halftime.

After a 30-yard run by Hamburg running back Dhionny Ruiz, and a 14-yard catch by Ruiz, Fleetwood’s Maddocks intercepted a Menapace pass attempt at the 3-yard line just before halftime.

Hamburg scored on a three-play, 62-yard drive on its first possession of the second half. Running back Mitchell Watt scored on a 24-yard run. Watt finished with a team-high 14 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Fleetwood extended its lead on the next possession on a 3-yard run by running back Gavin Morris. Morris led the Tigers on the ground with 16 carries for 78 yards and one touchdown.

Ruiz then reached the end zone for the first time with an 11-yard run late in the third quarter. Ruiz led the way for the Hawks throughout the second half.

Maddocks threw his third touchdown pass of the night, this time to Will Ryan for a 6-yard score that made it 28-19 on the first play in the fourth quarter.

Maddocks completed 13-of-21 pass attempts for 138 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran the ball six times for 55 yards and recorded an interception.

The Hawks nearly scored on their next drive, but Ty Wamsher recovered a Hamburg fumble at the Fleetwood 3-yard line.

Ruiz reached the end zone one last time on an 18-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Ruiz had 189 yards on 13 carries. He also had two touchdowns and one catch for 14 yards.

Fleetwood receiver Mason Musitano benefitted from Maddocks’ strong throwing night, hauling in seven catches for 86 yards.
