Two weeks after it was upset by Oley Valley in the first round of the county playoffs, Fleetwood got its revenge.
The top-seeded Tigers defeated the eighth-seeded Lynx 3-0 in the District 3 Class 2A quarterfinals on Saturday night at Fleetwood.
“The first time, we (hadn’t) lost all year, and I think we might have been full of ourselves,” Tigers coach Keith Schlegel said about the previous matchup between the two teams. “This time, we put the ball in the net.”
Sophomore Justin Hartline opened the scoring for Fleetwood midway through the first half, scoring from inside the 18-yard box. Senior Owen Schlegel had the assist.
The Tigers (17-1-1) nearly doubled their lead later in the half, but a powerful shot from senior Daniel Alvarez hit the post. Fleetwood finished the first half with five shots.
The Tigers capitalized on a corner kick early in the second half, as junior Nathaniel Herb scored with a header to make it 2-0. Herb’s goal was the result of a superb corner kick from senior Grant Hernandez, who was credited with the assist.
Fleetwood scored its final goal with just over 15 minutes remaining in the second half, as junior Josh Avila scored with a powerful shot from distance. Hartline had the assist.
“To finish three goals is a big plus for us,” Schlegel said. “It’s good to put the ball in the back of the net.”
Oley Valley (13-9) mustered little offense, registering just one shot on goal, which came in the first half. The Lynx took one corner kick.
“They had a vendetta to settle,” Oley Valley coach Shawn Meals said. “They played very well.”
The shutout victory is the Tigers’ 12th of the season. They have allowed just two goals in October, both of which came in the 2-1 loss to the Lynx in the Berks quarterfinals on Oct. 15.
Fleetwood will continue its district playoff run against No. 4 seed Lancaster Mennonite at home in the semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Tigers defeated the Blazers 4-0 on Aug. 31.
“(We have) confidence putting the ball in the back of the net and not giving up any goals,” Schlegel said. “It’s good to have the zero there. It’s a confidence booster.”
