Fleetwood rallied from a 27-point, third-quarter deficit to defeat Shamokin 42-41 in overtime Friday in the Eastern Conference Class 4A final at Shamokin.
The Indians (5-6) took a 41-34 lead on a 10-yard run by ZaKem Clinton on the first play of overtime.
The Tigers (6-5) took two plays to score, both runs by Czion Brickle, who ran in from the 2.
A penalty on Shamokin moved the ball half the distance from the 2 on the PAT. Given the shortened yardage, Fleetwood coach Steve Pangburn opted to go for two, and Trey Killian just got into the end zone to end a night to remember for the Tigers..
Fleetwood quarterback Jack Riffle, a senior, completed 26-of-49 passes for a school-record 419 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Mason Musitano had 15 catches for 212 yards, both school single-game records, and a touchdown. He
And Brickle finished with 166 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 23 carries, and three catches for 99 yards and a TD.
Fleetwood needed all of that, and some good fortune, to rally by Shamokin.
The Indians led 7-0 after a quarter, 27-7 at the half and 34-7 after Clinton scored on a 34-yard run with 11:13 left in the third quarter.
From that point, Shamokin turned it over four times.
Fleetwood got within 34-13 when Musitano caught a 17-yard pass from Riffle with 4:22 left in the third quarter.
In the fourth, a 52-yard pass from Riffle to Brickle made it 34-20 with 8:41 left.
The Tigers took over at the Shamokin 31 after recovering a fumble with 2:52 left, and Brickle’s 1-yard run got them within 34-27 with 1:28 left.
Fleetwood’s Chase Domenech then recovered the onside kick to give the Tigers the ball at the 50.
Riffle twice completed fourth-down passes to keep the drive alive. His 2-yard pass to Tristan McFarland made it 34-33, and William Maurek’s extra-point kick tied it with 10.5 seconds left.
Riffle broke the single-game pass yardage record of 327 set by Luke Emge in 2015.
Musitano also tied the school record for career touchdowns with his 15th.
The Tigers finished with 655 yards of total offense.
