A man wanted by police for a shooting outside a Reading hookah lounge in June has been apprehended in Texas.
Berks County District Attorney John Adams said Friday that U.S. marshals arrested Jose Torres, 23, of Reading late last week in Houston. Torres is believed by police to be the man responsible for a shooting outside the Pillar Lounge in the 100 block of Morgantown Road on June 29.
Adams said Torres has waived an extradition hearing and is expected to be returned to Berks in the next few weeks to face attempted homicide and aggravated assault charges.
The shooting took place around 4 a.m. and was captured by surveillance video. The victim survived the shooting and is continuing to heal from serious injuries, Adams said.
Adams said the Pillar Lounge has long been a problem spot in the county, several times being the location of violent incidents. He said he has contacted the owner and manager of the lounge to warn them that continued issues at there would be cause for action.
“I told them I would seek to files charges as a public nuisance and to take the appropriate steps to close them down,” Adams said.
Adams said that since his communication with the owner and management there has not been a serious incident at the location.
