Gov. Mifflin, Brandywine Heights each win in five sets in District 3 boys volleyball openers [updated]

Gov. Mifflin won the final two sets to defeat Mechanicsburg 3-2 in a District 3 Class 3A first-round match Thursday at Cumberland Valley High School.

The Berks champion and ninth-seeded Mustangs won 23-25, 32-30, 24-26, 25-19 and 15-12 to advance to a quarterfinal match Saturday at top-seeded Central Dauphin (16-0) at 1 p.m.

The victory over the eighth-seeded Wildcats (12-5) was Mifflin’s first in districts since 2018.

For the Mustangs (16-4), Aidan Young had 23 kills, 14 digs and one block, Josh Wert had 14 kills, 16 digs and six aces, and Tyler Knoop had 13 kills, two aces and one block.

Brandywine Heights 3, Cocalico 2: At Mertztown, the seventh-seeded Bullets (13-6) defeated the 10th-seeded Eagles (8-9) in a back-and-forth District 3 Class 2A first-round match.

Brandywine won 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25 and 16-14 to advance to a quarterfinal match Saturday at second-seeded York Suburban (14-1) at 1 p.m.

Braydon Ambruster had 30 kills for the Bullets, Seamus Coffin 53 assists, Ben Miller seven kills and six blocks, Collin Kowalchuck 16 digs, Evan Stoudt seven kills and 12 digs and Adam Lichtenwalner seven kills and four blocks.

Northern York 3, Berks Catholic 0: At Forino Sports Complex, the ninth-seeded Polar Bears downed the eighth-seeded Saints 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 in the first round of the District 3 Class 2A playoffs.

Matthew Gramley had four kills and four digs, and Will Mickulik had seven kills, eight digs and a block for Berks Catholic (13-6).

Northern York (9-8) will travel to top-seeded Lower Dauphin Saturday for a quarterfinal.
