Gov. Mifflin defeated Berks Catholic 41-40 in a BCIAA girls basketball semifinal at Santander Arena Tuesday.
The fourth-seeded Mustangs (16-8) won it on Shakyla Mayo’s driving layup as time expired to take down the top-seeded and defending champion Saints (19-5).
Mifflin will play Wilson in the championship game Friday at Santander Arena at 6 p.m.
Gov. Mifflin started fast thanks to a 5-0 run by Taylor Koenig. Koenig made a 3-pointer and a smooth floater before Berks Catholic responded with a 3-pointer by Caraline Herb.
Mackenzie Gordos made a 3-pointer to give the Saints their first lead at 6-5. Both defenses played tight and scoring was at a premium in the first quarter. The Saints held an 8-5 lead after one.
The offenses opened up early in the second quarter. With the score 18-10 halfway through the second, the Mustangs scored eight unanswered to tie it at 18-18. Berks Catholic went on a 6-0 run to close out the half and take a 24-18 lead.
Caroline Reedy led the Saints with seven points at the half and Koenig led Gov. Mifflin with seven points.
Each team shared plenty of 3-point opportunities in the first half as Berks Catholic made four 3-pointers and Gov. Mifflin hit three.
Just as she did to start the game, Koenig made a 3-pointer to open the second half. The play jump-started the Mustangs, who cut their deficit to 26-24, forcing a Berks Catholic timeout with 5:21 left in the third.
Koenig scored on a driving layup and made the ensuing foul shot for a three-point play following the timeout. Strong defense by the Mustangs limited the Saints’ scoring opportunities throughout the third.
Koenig made a jumper along the base line to give Gov. Mifflin their first lead since the opening quarter at 29-28 midway through the third. The Mustangs outscored the Saints 11-4 and led 29-28 after three quarters. Koenig scored eight of Gov. Mifflin’s 11 third-quarter points.
Gov. Mifflin held a 36-33 lead midway through the fourth when Reedy made a deep 3-pointer to it at 36-36. Madison Langdon recovered a Mustangs turnover and took it for a fastbreak layup on the next play to give Berks Catholic a 38-36 lead with three minutes to go.
Each team protected the ball down the stretch and Reedy made two free throws with just over 30 seconds to go to give Berks Catholic a 40-37 lead.
A blocked Koenig 3-pointer followed by a Gov. Mifflin foul gave Gordos a chance at the foul line. A missed free throw gave the Mustangs the ball back with 18.4 seconds to go.
Shayanna Mayo rebounded a missed 3-pointer and got the putback to bring the Mustangs within one at 40-39 with 10 seconds left.
Gordos got another chance at a one-and-one and missed the first free throw. Gov. Mifflin was able to corral the rebound and Shakyla Mayo took a breakaway down the court to score a game-winning driving layup.
