Hamburg Grange free book program encourages literacy

The Hamburg Grange #2103 handed out the book “Dragons Love Tacos” by Adam Rubin and illustrated by Daniel Salmieri to 140 kindergarten students at the Perry and Tilden elementary schools at the start of this school year.

“The Pennsylvania State Grange has an initiative to encourage literacy by providing books to students in local elementary schools.  The Books for a Buck program encourages local Granges to provide books throughout the year to a class in a local school, but we chose to take a different approach and provide a brand new book to each new kindergartener to not only encourage reading but to welcome them to school,” said Grange member Barbara Schroeder.

Hamburg Grange hopes that providing free books will encourage reading and literacy early in children’s development.

“We have received several ‘thank you’s’ from teachers.  Unfortunately, due to privacy concerns, we don’t get a lot of feedback otherwise,” said Schroeder.

Hamburg Grange’s yearly fundraising events help with funding, including sandwich sales and pot pie dinners.

“Our goal is to get the books out as early in the school year as possible.  This year they were handed out on Sept. 6,” said Schroeder.
