Hamburg to induct five into its Athletic Hall of Fame

Hamburg will induct five new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday following the boys basketball consolation game of the Hamburg Tip Off Tournament.

The consolation game starts at 6 p.m.

The inductees are Joe Gerner, Randy Hoffman, Terry Lindenmuth, Tom Palubinski and Nick Sanko.

Gerner, a 1964 grad, was named Hamburg’s Outstanding Male Athlete as a senior. He earned four letters each in soccer, basketball and baseball. In soccer, he was a first-team All-Berks selection as a senior. He also served as team captain. In basketball, he helped the Hawks win division titles in 1962 and ’64, and was a second-team All-Berks pick as a senior. He also was a team captain. In baseball, he helped the Hamburg Legion team win a state title in 1963.

Hoffman was the boys and girls bowling coach for 18 years. He compiled a 180-136 record in boys bowling, winning Berks and state titles in 2000. The Hawks were the Berks runners-up in 2007. He also led the boys team to division titles in 2000, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Lindenmuth, a 1969 grad, was Hamburg’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1968-69 after participating in soccer, wrestling and track and field. He earned four letters in each sport. In soccer, he was an All-Berks pick in 1968 and ’69, helping the Hawks win division titles in both seasons. In wrestling, he also was an All-Berks pick in 1968 and ’69, when he won county titles. He went on to participate in soccer (four years), wrestling (two years) and lacrosse (two years) at Kutztown University. He was a two-time team captain in soccer. He also has coached wrestling and soccer for the Kutztown School District, and was on the BCIAA Board of Control.

Palubinski, a 1974 grad, won three letters in football and four in baseball for the Hawks. In football, he was a first-team All-Berks and Inter-County League selection in 1973, and set the school’s single-game touchdown record with three against Freeland that season. He was named the Reading Eagle’s All-Decade Team for the 1970s. In baseball, he was an All-Berks pick in 1974. He went on to play football for four years at East Stroudsburg, and is a member of its Hall of Fame. He was a two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and ECAC first-team selection (1975, ’76). He led the Warriors in receptions and receiving yards in 1975, ’76 and ’77), and helped them win PSAC titles in 1975 and ’76.
