Heat advisory in effect for Thursday for parts of PA and NJ

The National Weather Service is warning of hazardous heat conditions on Thursday in eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania, as well as parts of New Jersey.

The agency issued a heat advisory that includes Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh and Montgomery counties, as well as Mercer County in New Jersey.

The heat advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. The weather service says heat index values in the triple digits are expected.

A forecast from the National Weather Service says the high temperature in Berks will be near 92 degrees, but combined with the humidity it will feel like 101 degrees. There is a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, bringing the possibility of flash flooding and damaging wind gusts.

Thursday night there is a chance of thunderstorms before 8 p.m. It will be partly cloudy, with a low around 74.

The heat advisory urges residents to take precautions to avoid the potentially serious impacts of the severe weather.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the National Weather Service said in its advisory.

The advisory also encourages people to wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

The advisory also reminds people to take action when they see symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

“Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location,” it states. “Heat stroke is an emergency — call 911.”
