High school baseball: 6 Berks players named first team all-state

Six players, including three from Gov. Mifflin, have been named to the first team of the Pennsylvania State Baseball Coaches Association all-state team, it was announced Thursday.

In Class 6A, the Mustangs’ Bryce Detwiler, Ethan Grim and Travis Jenkins made the first team.

In 4A, Hamburg’s Tyler Shuey was chosen and in 3A, Berks Catholic’s Trey Stricker and Owen Schalk were picked.

Detwiler, the BCIAA player of the year, has committed to UConn and pitched and played shortstop for the Mustangs.

Grim was one of the top pitchers in the state and has committed to Virginia Tech, but has received attention from Major League scouts. He participated in the MLB Draft Combine this week in Phoenix, Arizona, and reportedly impressed scouts with his performance.

Jenkins, used primarily as a catcher, has committed to Canisius.

Shuey was picked to the 4A team as an infielder.

Stricker, a West Chester commit, was the Saints’ top pitcher and Schalk was a standout outfielder for the Saints.

In Class 6A, three Berks players were picked to the second team: Gov. Mifflin’s Matt Koehler, an infielder, and Branson Adams, an outfielder, and Reading High utility player Janser Paredes.

In Class 5A, Exeter’s Jake Hafer made the second team as a utility player.

In Class 4A, Hamburg’s Scottie Dunleavy was picked as a utility player on the second team.

In Class 3A, Wyomissing’s Ryan Graham was picked to the second team as an infielder.
