High winds knock out power for thousands in Berks

Strong winds whipping through the region have led to thousands of Berks County customers losing power, with reports of downed trees and power lines reported across the county.

The county is under a wind advisory from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration until 6 p.m. Monday. The advisory states that winds between 20 mph and 30 mph are expected throughout the day, with possible gusts up to 50 mph.

PPL Electric Utilities and Met-Ed reported outages in Berks on Monday morning.

According to its online outage map, PPL had around 400 customers without power as of 10 a.m. A little more than 230 of the those customers are in the Morgantown area, while a little more than 50 are in the Wernersville area.

The Met-Ed online outage map showed more than 3,000 customers without power as of 10 a.m. An outage near Lorane was impacting more than 800 customers, while one near Pricetown was impacting about 575 customers.

Outages near Laureldale, Mohnton, Limekiln and Birdsboro were each impacting more than 300 customers.
