Power outages affecting over 8,000 in Berks following wet, windy night

More than 8,000 homes and businesses in Berks County are without power this morning following a night of heavy wind and rain.

Met-Ed reported outages affecting a total of 8,153 across much of the county as of 8:30 a.m. Friday. Eastern Berks was hardest hit.

Met-Ed’s website reported the following outage totals: Exeter Township, 1,221; Hereford Township, 697; Longswamp Township, 688; Amity Township, 587; Greenwich Township/Lenhartsville, 495; Brecknock Township, 434; Rockland Township, 381; Windsor Township, 282; Alsace Township, 272; Cumru Township, 272; Richmond Township, 150; Washington Township, 130; and several municipalities with fewer than 100 each.

PPL Electric Utilities reported a total of 285 customers without power in its service area in southern and southwestern Berks. Caernarvon Township had the most with 122, followed by Spring Township with 98 and South Heidelberg Township with 38.

There is no word when power will be restored.

A Berks County Department of Emergency Services official said the 9-1-1 center was busy all morning fielding calls for toppled trees and fallen limbs and utility wires.

A wind advisory that was imposed Thursday evening remains in effect through 11 a.m. Friday.

A high of 47 degrees is expected at noon today, but it will feel about 10 degrees colder than that to the skin. The temperature is expected to drop below 40 by late afternoon, according to AccuWeather.

Even though clouds will give way to full sunshine this afternoon, it will feel more like the high 20s.
