Home in eastern Berks destroyed by 2-alarm blaze

Fire crews from eastern Berks and western Montgomery counties battled a two-alarm blaze Sunday afternoon that left a large home in Earl Township in ruins.

The fire was reported at 4:38 p.m. after someone in the home on Club Road off Route 73 called 911 to report fire at the kitchen window, state police said in a release. The three occupants of the home were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and got out safely with their dogs before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters rescued two cats from the home.

Upon arrival, crews were met with fire that extended up the back of the house into the attic area. A second alarm was struck to draw additional crews needed to put out flames in the attic and locate and extinguish fire in numerous hidden hollow spaces.

Multiple tanker trucks shuttled water to the scene from a nearby pond.

The fire originated in the rear of the home, but the cause remains under investigation by the state police Troop L fire marshal unit.

Damage was estimated at more than $400,000.
