Home severely damaged in fire in western Berks

A fire Monday afternoon caused extensive damage to a two-story home in Tulpehocken Township, fire officials said.

Crews were called to the scene about 2:15 p.m. after reports from neighbors of smoke and flames coming from the front door of a home on Goose Run Road.

The fire had spread throughout the building when crews arrived at the scene, reports said.

Homeowners weren’t home when the fire started, according to Chief Curvin Martin of Mount Aetna Rescue Fire Company.

He said the fire likely originated in the living room and extended up the wall and into the second story.

“It was pretty extensive damage,” Martin said.

The fire was under control within about 30 minutes, Martin said, but crews had to contend with hoarding conditions that caused the flames to spread.

No one was injured in the blaze, Martin said, and the residents of the home are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
