Hope Rescue Mission celebrates 130th anniversary

Hope Rescue Mission celebrated its 130th anniversary at its annual gala, highlighting its work and recognizing those who have support the agency.

Founded in 1894, Hope Rescue Mission, 645 N. Sixth St., is dedicated to providing a safe haven for men facing homelessness. For over a century, the organization has offered meals, shelter and spiritual guidance through outreach programs to as many as 250 men daily.

“As we celebrate 130 years of service, we are excited to share our recent  achievements and continue to build upon our mission of providing hope and transformation for those in need, Robert Turchi, CEO of Hope Rescue Mission, said in a release.

During the gala Saturday at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading, officials also celebrated the one-year anniversary of the expansion of services to women and children at the LightHouse Women & Children’s Center, which opened in October and can house up to 90 women and children.

“We are so thankful for everyone’s incredible support,” said Kate Alley, LightHouse Women & Children’s Center executive director. “Your help has made a huge difference in the lives of homeless women and children; we couldn’t have done it without you.”

Officials noted the one-year anniversary of HopeHouses, which offer permanent supportive housing to guests of the mission and LightHouse who have successfully progressed through on-site residential programs.

David C. Roland presented the David H. Roland Award to Penske Corp. and the Penske associates for their contributions and dedication. The award was accepted by Brian Hard, Penske Trucking Solutions CEO, and Art Vallely, Penske Truck Leasing president.
