I-78 in northern Berks partially reopened after tractor-trailer fire [Update]

One lane of Interstate 78 westbound in Greenwich Township was opened at 6:20 p.m. following a five-hour shutdown on the highway while crews cleared the scene of a disabled tractor-trailer that caught fire.

Crews initially responded to calls for a disabled truck that was smoking around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Fire crews arriving at the scene reported that the truck was aflame and closed the highway between the Krumsville and Lenhartsville exits.

Crews from Kutztown and Virginville responded, and additional water was requested from the Weisenberg Township department in Lehigh County, according to Josh Young, deputy chief of Kutztown Fire & Rescue.

The fire was contained around 1:45 p.m.

Traffic has been diverted at the Krumsville exit to Old Route 22 in Berks, and Lehigh County fire police were diverting traffic to Route 100, Young said.

Road crews were working on clearing debris and removing the damaged vehicle, according to reports.

One lane was reportedly reopened around 6:20 p.m.
