Is rain coming? September has been dry, but relief could arrive soon

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, there are 1.9 million Pennsylvanians residing in areas of drought, which was an increase of123.5% since last week. The U.S. Drought Monitor is a joint effort of the National Drought Mitigation Center, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Southeastern Pennsylvania is mostly escaping an official drought designation. Instead, portions are being deemed abnormally dry. In Mercer County, N.J., there are areas of moderate drought.

In September, about 1 inch of rain has been recorded at Philadelphia International Airport. The National Weather Service states the normal precipitation for September in Philadelphia is 4.4 inches. For Reading, the NWS lists 3.5 to 3.8 inches to be normal precipitation in September, and it has recorded 2.1 inches so far this month.

At Reading Regional Airport, 2.13 inches of rain has been recorded so far in September. The NOAA report for rainfall at Reading Regional Airport showed August 2025 was 2.75 inches below the normal average.

Those numbers may be about to get a boost.

National Weather Service forecast

Today: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 85. Southwest wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 11 p.m., then a slight chance of showers between 11 p.m. and midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: A chance of showers after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 81. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday night: A chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 79. South wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 a.m., then a chance of showers. Low around 66. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Friday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
