Local business leader Jim Boscov has been recognized for his willingness to devote time and resources to a worthy cause.
During a special ceremony Thursday, the CEO of Boscov’s Department Store was named the winner of the 2025 Berks County Intermediate Unit’s Outstanding Community Partner Award.
The award is presented annually to someone who advocates in the community for the BCIU and local students, volunteers their time and talent to support the BCIU and is a leader in their field. Recipients must demonstrate a longstanding commitment to educational advancement and the role of the organization.
In giving the award to Boscov, BCIU officials said he exemplifies the highest ideals of this award through decades of respected leadership and dedicated civic engagement.
“His commitment to civic responsibility, expanding access to opportunity and championing the revitalization of the greater Reading area is evident in both his professional accomplishments and personal advocacy,” officials said in a statement announcing the award.
Under his leadership, officials said the department store has remained a cornerstone of the regional economy while fostering a culture of community investment.
“Through Our City Reading he has led neighborhood revitalization efforts and created public-private partnerships that have improved the quality of life and expanded opportunities for countless families,” officials said.
Most notably, they cited his partnership with BCIU on the revitalization of the vacant former factory building in the 200 block of Washington Street — home to the newest BCIU Learning Center. The center features two Head Start classrooms, an outdoor play area and instructional facilities for early learners.
“Mr. Boscov exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding community partner,” said Dr. Jill Hackman, BCIU executive director. “His vision, compassion and leadership have created lasting change in our community. By supporting early education and community revitalization, he created opportunities that will benefit thousands of children and families for generations to come.
“We are proud to recognize his tremendous contributions.”
