The Berks County Parks & Recreation Department continues to present programs promoting nature, history, and outdoor activity throughout the month of October 2024.

Saturday, Oct. 5 | Fall Frolic Wellness Walk | 9 a.m. @ Rebers Bridge Parking Lot
We’ll be meeting at the Rebers Bridge parking lot and walking the Connector Trail section to the Stilling Basin and back.
Free | Registration is recommended.

Sunday, Oct. 6 | Theorem Painting Workshop – Botanical Pears | noon to 2:30 p.m. @ Beidler House
Join Instructor Peggy Allen of Heritage Art & Craft Studio to learn the history and techniques of Theorem Painting. Theorem painting is decorative painting with the aid of stencils. It was a traditional folk art popular in the 1800s. For more information, call 610-374-8839.
Registration fee is $5 | Material fee is $25 | Registration is required.

Sunday, Oct. 6 | Fall Forage ID w/ The Wild Edibles Lady | 1 p.m. @ Bingaman House, Antietam Lake
Join Debbie Naha-Koretzky, “The Wild Edibles Lady,” to learn more about foraged foods that are found in the fall. There will be a small tasting following a PowerPoint presentation and hike.
$5 per person | Registration is required.

Wednesday, Oct. 9 | Basket Weaving with Invasives | 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. @ Berks County Heritage Center
Join shepherdess and homesteader Lelayna Yarnall as we create a simple foraging basket using invasive species gathered from the park.
Free | Registration is required.

Thursday, Oct. 10 | Trail Tales | 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. @ Bingaman House, Antietam Lake
This toddler-age program focuses on a nature topic each month partnered with a story and a craft. Geared towards children ages 3-5.
Free | Registration is required.

Thursday, Oct. 10 | Epler’s Schoolhouse Pork Dinner Fundraiser | 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. @ Berks County Heritage Center
$10 per meal includes a pulled pork sandwich, baked potato, applesauce, butter, and BBQ sauce. Tickets must be purchased in advance either at Epler’s Schoolhouse on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 6, from noon to 4 p.m. or by calling Bonnie at 610-507-2263.

Friday, Oct. 11 | Gruber Wagon Works Lantern Tours | 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. @ Berks County Heritage Center
Visit the Gruber Wagon Works after hours and enjoy our annual evening tour of this one-of-a-kind National Historic Landmark. Tours will start every half-hour beginning at 5:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 8:30 p.m. Tours of the Wagon Works will last approximately one hour and are best enjoyed by children and adults ages 7+.
Ticket costs are $7/adult, $6/senior, and $5/child ages 6-12. | Registration online with RecDesk is required.

Friday, Oct. 11 | Heritage Haunts | 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. @ Berks County Heritage Center
Explore the history of Halloween and encounter some of Berks County’s spookiest history. Join us on Friday, Oct. 11, for a lantern tour of the Gruber Wagon Works (registration is required, see Lantern Tours event) and stay to learn about the history of Halloween in the Stonehouse. Explore around the grounds of the Heritage Center where actors from Yocum Institute’s Teen Ensemble will be shining a light on some of Berks’ spooky events through brief performances and storytelling. Visit Epler’s Schoolhouse for a reading of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and tours of the schoolhouse.

Thursday, Oct. 17 | Full Moon Halloween Hike | 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m. @ Berks County Heritage Center
See the park after dark, hear tragic histories, see crepuscular critters, and walk the trails with a guide as we enjoy the full Hunter’s Moon. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a flashlight. Hikes leave at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m. and have limited space.
$5 per person | Registration is required.

Sunday, Oct. 20 | Cat Head Basket Workshop | noon to 4 p.m. @ Berks County Heritage Center Barn
Just in time for Halloween, Vicky Heffner returns to lead this class in creating a basket, when turned upside down, looks like a cat’s head. Supply cost is $40. Cash or checks payable to Vicky Heffner is required on the day of the program. For more information, call 610-374-8839.
