The Kutztown Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee announced that three alumni and a former coach will be inducted into the Kutztown Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame during the Jan. 26 Kutztown High School boys basketball game at the Kutztown High School.
Jay Wentzel
A 1964 graduate, Wentzel was a standout in basketball at KAHS. The 5th all-time scorer at Kutztown, he scored more than 1,202 points during his four years. He was named first team All-County from 1962-1964 and led his team to four Berks County championships and two District III championships. Wentzel went on to play basketball at Kutztown University and eventually officiated at the scholastic level for nine years.
Nicholas Sosik III
A 1990 graduate, Sosik was a four sport athlete in soccer, basketball, football and track. In soccer,
Sosik was a top 10 county scorer as a freshman and junior and scored six goals in one game. Excelling in football, he was named first team All-County kicker in 1989. He went on to play football at the University of Connecticut and was their starting place kicker from 1990-94. Sosik was a Yankee Conference Honorable Mention and finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in UConn football history.
Gary Miklus
Over his 20 years as KAHS softball coach, Miklus accumulated 384 wins. He led his teams in nine county titles, three district titles, and two state titles as well as five consecutive county titles under his leadership.
Michael Bergstrom
A 2001 graduate, Bergstrom was a standout in baseball at KAHS. He was named to the Berks Division III team from 1999-2001, All County Team in 2001, and Berks Player of the Year in 2001. He was also named to the Berks Carpenter Cup all star team in 2001. His career record as pitcher was 19-7 and his single season ERA is second on school records. His single season strikeouts is fourth on school records with 94. In 2002, Bergstrom was awarded the George “Whitey” Kurowski Berks County High School MVP by the Reading Hot Stovers. He went on to play baseball at West Chester University and Georgia College and State University.
