A game-sealing interception helped Kutztown earn its sixth consecutive win on Saturday.
Golden Bears defensive back Justin Harris intercepted Lock Haven quarterback Danny Sanchez in the end zone with less than three minutes remaining to propel Kutztown to a 7-3 win over the Bald Eagles in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East game at Lock Haven.
Needing a touchdown and facing a fourth-and-goal at the Golden Bears’ 6-yard line, Sanchez lofted a pass into the corner of the end zone, which was intercepted by a diving Harris. The Golden Bears were able to run out the remaining time to earn the victory.
Kutztown (5-0, 6-2) remains in sole possession of first place in the PSAC East.
Kutztown has held its opponents to six points or less in three straight games and four of its last five. The Golden Bears have allowed just 14.8 points per game, the fewest in the PSAC.
The result marked the second straight game in which Kutztown won with only one touchdown, as it beat Shippensburg 9-6 in overtime last week. The victory is also the the fewest points the Golden Bears have scored in a win since Sept. 13, 2003, when it beat Lock Haven 7-3.
Kutztown held the Bald Eagles (2-3, 4-4) to 201 yards of total offense. The defense intercepted Sanchez three times and stopped Lock Haven on 2-of-3 fourth-down conversion attempts.
The Golden Bears opened the scoring midway through the first quarter with an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Judd Novak to wide receiver Sincere Thomas. Novak, a redshirt freshman, finished 10-of-23 passing for 119 yards with one interception.
Lock Haven scored on a 35-yard field goal from Brett Zachman early in the second quarter. Other than Harris’ interception late in the fourth quarter, the scoring drive was the closest the Bald Eagles got to Kutztown’s end zone.
FDU-Florham 41, Alvernia 16: At Madison, N.J., the Devils (2-4, 3-4) scored 38 straight points to beat the Golden Wolves (0-6, 0-7) in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
Alvernia took a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter on a 30-yard field goal from Joe Fragale before FDU-Florham went on its run.
Golden Wolves quarterback Colin Payne, an Exeter grad, completed 15-of-30 passes for 153 yards and one touchdown with one interception.
Widener 48, Albright 3: At Shirk Stadium, the Lions (0-6, 0-7) lost their 23rd straight, falling to the Pride (4-2, 5-2) in a Middle Atlantic Conference game.
Widener led 13-0 after one quarter and 34-3 at the half. Albright finished with just 42 yards of total offense on 57 plays.
Kicker Dean Severin made a 51-yard field goal early in the second quarter for Albright. The Lions finished with five first downs and three turnovers.
