Last week the U.S. House voted to censure Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York, who pleaded guilty to intentionally pulling a fire alarm, disrupting congressional business. He paid a $1,000 fine and had to write a letter of apology.
As a retired school administrator, I can tell you that when this occurs in a Pennsylvania school, it is one of the most egregious offenses. A student who commits this offense is likely to be expelled. A staff member who does it is typically fired. To call fire and police personnel for a false alarm endangers people who may actually need these services.
Yet U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan chose to vote “present.” Perhaps more disgusting, Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon voted no.
Here are other interesting facts. Bowman was a school administrator prior to joining Congress. Houlahan once was a science teacher, and Scanlon is a member of the Judiciary Committee. With their backgrounds, all should know the seriousness of this crime.
Prior to the vote Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a lawyer, gave a speech urging Democrats to vote against this resolution, and 191 Democratic puppets on a string, including Scanlon, did so.
That’s partisan politics at its best; no wonder the approval rate for Congress is 16%.
