Letter: Houlahan making move to left

Editor:

Kudos to letter writer Keith Worley for calling out U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan’s statement criticizing the Israeli leadership and advocating that in her words “Israel and Hamas should pursue a lasting peace” (“Houlahan misguided on issue of war in Gaza,” Feb. 21). Really? Negotiate with a recognized terrorist organization?

A look further into her recent voting record demonstrates a turn toward the left. She refused to censure Rep. Jamaal Bowman, convicted of pulling a fire alarm to disrupt Congress, and voted not to censure anti-American U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib.

On H.R. 957 she voted against denouncing Biden administration open border policies, yet 14 other Democrats had the courage to support it. She opposed the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. She voted nay on the Unlocking our Domestic National Gas Potential Act, yet she is supposed to represent a state that has some of the nation’s largest untapped natural gas reserves.

A representative employing today’s technology could send an email blast to a sample of the people in their district and then vote or offer opinions based on those results. That is how representative government should work. Instead, representatives vote based on the direction of their political leadership. I cannot imagine that the people of the 6th District support negotiating with Hamas terrorists.

Houlahan’s record confirms that she has moved left and is far from the problem solver she portrays herself to be.
