The current efforts by Elon Musk, with the full-throated support of the Trump administration, to extinguish the U.S. Agency for International Development is wrong on a number of fronts.
The proposed elimination of funding and personnel from areas in dire need of a wide range of support would not only have deadly consequences for our brothers and sisters throughout the world, it is also short-sighted and would be detrimental to the interests of the U.S.
If we abandon the humanitarian and peacekeeping efforts of the USAID, we create a relational vacuum. Our lack of involvement and influence in these areas of need would create opportunities for entities such as Russia, China, Iran, the Islamic State and Al-Qaida to fill that void of involvement and relationship.
The USAID issue is just one of many that the current administration has created, not considering the potential negative consequences of its actions.
This president and his minions continue to create self-inflicted wounds to the social fabric and the respected leadership of our nation. It doesn’t have to be this way.
