Many years ago, following my discharge from the Navy at Alameda Naval Air station in California, I was able to catch a Mats flight to Willow Grove Naval Air Station, a ride to the Philadelphia Reading Railroad Terminal and a Reading Railroad train to Pottsville.
I was from Shoemakersville and in uniform, and though this train had no scheduled stop at this small town, the conductor and engineer were kind enough to make an exception. I was able to surprise my parents, who had no idea that I was finally returning home.
Unfortunately, today, this would be almost impossible to achieve — even by long-range passenger bus service, which has almost disappeared from this area.
With little public transportation, more than a few U. S. residents must have difficulty finding suitable, affordable substitutes.
