Russia has invaded eastern Ukraine. Russia and China are waiting for the West’s response.
This response will test the determination and strength of Western nations’ willingness to stand with fledgling nations.
Because of years of Russian appeasement policy, NATO and the United States bear some responsibility for the destruction of Ukraine.
The United States had a history of defending freedom, and we fought hard during the Cold War to advance democracy worldwide. We brought in supplies to people stranded in West Berlin. We drove the communists past the 38th parallel in Korea. We waded through swamps to fight Ho Chi Min in Vietnam. We have fought hard against tyranny and authoritarianism.
However, with the invasion of Ukraine, Eastern Europe may lose its sovereignty.
But whose fault is it? Since the end of the Cold War, Western policies toward Russia have proved timid.
NATO did not accept Ukraine’s inclusion in the alliance for fear of Russian retaliation.
And the sanctions over Russia’s takeover of Crimea proved ineffective, as President Vladimir Putin’s regime still holds Crimea.
In short, we showed Russian President Vladimir Putin that his misbehaviors merit nothing more than a slap on the wrist.
As Russia invades, are we prepared to suffer with Ukraine? The sanctions that have been put in place mean that we will bear the consequences of stopping totalitarianism.
May we be dedicated to stand with Ukraine in its fight for freedom.
