Reading, PA: Today, Mayor Eddie Morán announced leadership changes within the Reading Police Department, following the departure of Chief Elias Vazquez, who has chosen to step away from his role for personal reasons.
Mayor Eddie Morán commended Chief Vazquez for his service to the City and highlighted the department’s accomplishments under his leadership.
“Chief Vazquez has led with dedication, integrity, and vision,” said Mayor Morán. “During his time at the helm, our city has seen meaningful progress in crime reduction. With the strategies he set in place to not only address enforcement but also build trust and relationships in our neighborhoods, we saw a 21% crime reduction in 2024, with this trend continuing with a 32% crime reduction in the first quarter of 2025, and consecutive crime reductions in the last six months. It is clear that his emphasis on community policing demonstrates the importance of public safety being about partnership, not just policing.”
Chief Vazquez also prioritized diversity and inclusion within the department, ensuring that the Reading Police Department reflects the community it serves. As part of the transition, Deputy Chief Javier Ruiz has been appointed Acting Chief of Police. Ruiz brings extensive experience and a strong record of community engagement. In addition, Captain of Patrol Aaron Demko has been promoted to Deputy Chief, filling the position vacated by Ruiz.
“Together we are on a strong path toward achieving our main goal, which is making Reading a safe and welcoming city for our residents and guests alike.” said Acting Chief Javier Ruiz.
“I have full confidence in this leadership team,” Mayor Morán said. “Together, they will continue the progress we have made and guide our city forward with professionalism, accountability, and vision.”
The City of Reading thanks Chief Vazquez for his service and wishes him the very best in the future.
