Exeter Township has a new manager.
The board of supervisors on Monday announced the hiring of Reading Managing Director William Heim for the position.
“We are thrilled to welcome someone of Bill’s caliber to our team,” supervisor chairman Jack Piho said in the announcement. “His extensive experience and leadership in all aspects of public administration will be invaluable as we continue to advance our vision for a thriving Exeter Township.”
Information on Heim’s start date and salary was not immediately available.
Heim, who is also a former Reading police chief, said he was looking forward to his new role in Exeter.
“I am excited to join those who value this great community and are committed to its success,” he said in the township’s statement.
Exeter has been without a permanent manager since last August when Mary McBride resigned from the post about six months after she took over the position. Larry Piersol had initially been serving as interim manager in addition to his role as public works director, and most recently Lisa Hagberg, a partner at Kafferlin Strategies, has been serving in that role.
Heim joins Exeter after more than 40 years of service in law enforcement and local government. He has served as chief of police in Reading, Lancaster and Muhlenberg Township. For the past two years he has been employed as managing director for Reading.
Exeter officials said Heim has led a career marked by leadership, having implemented significant improvements in community policing, crime reduction and departmental efficiency.
“Bill’s extensive background and street credibility make him uniquely qualified to lead Exeter Township,” supervisor vice chairman Clarence Hamm said in the township’s statement. “We are confident that his experience will guide us through the challenges ahead.”
