A pair of Berks County natives are serving in Navy combat ship crews based in Mayport, Fla.

Petty Officer 1st Class Jonathan Rodiguez, a 2004 graduate of Reading High School, serves aboard Pre-Commissioning Unit Marinette. PCU refers to crews aboard vessels under construction prior to official commissioning.

Rodriguez joined the Navy nine years ago.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Austin Miller, a 2016 graduate of Muhlenberg High School, serves aboard the combat ship USS St. Louis operating out of Mayport, Fla.

Miller joined the Navy two years ago.

Marinette and St. Louis are fast, optimally-manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, according to Navy officials. Littoral combat ships integrate with joint, combined, manned and unmanned teams in missions around the globe.
