Montgomery County man charged with killing girlfriend with hammer

NORRISTOWN — A Perkiomen Township man has been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend, whose body was found in the apartment they shared in the township.

William Roy Carey Jr., 46, was charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder and possessing an Instrument of crime in the death of Jessica Zipkin, 34, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Pennsylvania State Police Capt. Gerard B. McShea announced Saturday night.

A press release and court documents released by the DA’s office gave the following account:

Pennsylvania State Police from the Skippack station responded to an apartment in the 500 block of Gravel Pike in Perkiomen Township at 1:25 a.m. on Saturday, after a 911 caller told the dispatcher that there was possibly a deceased female at that location.

Troopers arrived on the scene and found Zipkin on the floor of a bedroom with a fatal wound to the back of her head. A bloody hammer was recovered next to the body.

An autopsy was conducted later Saturday by Dr. Ian Hood of the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, who determined that Zipkin died of blunt force trauma to the head. Hood found the woman was struck multiple times in the head. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Police and detectives recovered blood-stained clothing and shoes Carey was wearing when he allegedly killed his girlfriend. They also obtained a video showing Carey entering nearby buildings where the clothing and his cellphone were disposed of.

The time of death was not released but neighbors told authorities they heard a loud argument and a woman screaming Friday around 2:30 p.m.

Carey was arraignment Saturday by Magisterial District Judge Henry Schireson, Afterwards, he was remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Eagleville. There is no bail available for first-degree murder charges.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Nov. 13 before Magisterial District Judge Adam Katzman.
