Muhlenberg beaten by Shaler in the first round of the PIAA Class 5A baseball playoffs

Muhlenberg was shut out over the final six innings in a 7-1 loss to Shaler in the first round of the PIAA Class 5A baseball tournament Monday at North Allegheny High School in Wexford.

The District 3 fifth-place Muhls (16-10), in states for the first time since 2021, took a 1-0 lead in the first when Derek Wilson, who finished 2-for-3 with a double, drove in Shane Rosenberry.

District 7 champion Shaler (20-4) tied it in the third on an RBI double by Miguel Hugas.

The Titans took the lead with four in the fourth, the big hit a three-run double by Hugas. Shaler made it 7-1 with two unearned runs in the fifth.

Hugas finished 2-for-4.

Eli Keller went 2-for-2 for Muhlenberg.

Shaler will play District 7 third-place Penn Trafford, an 8-5 winner over District 6 champ Central Mountain Monday, in a quarterfinal game Thursday.
