Muhlenberg defeats West York in first round of District 3 Class 5A boys basketball playoffs

Muhlenberg held West York to just 14 points in the middle two quarters to earn a 46-39 win in a District 3 Class 5A first-round game Monday at York.

The victory also clinched a berth in the PIAA Tournament.

The 10th-seeded Muhls (15-9) trailed 14-11 after a quarter, but outscored the seventh-seeded Bulldogs 25-14 over the middle two quarters, allowing just seven points in each. West York made just five field goals over the final three quarters, three in the second half

Muhlenberg advances to play at top-seeded Manheim Central (18-4) in a quarterfinal game Thursday at 7 p.m. The Barons had a first-round bye.

Dan Mosquera led the Muhls with 11 points Monday, including nine of their 10 in the fourth quarter, when he went 7-for-9 from the foul line. Luis Valentin scored nine points for Muhlenberg.

David McGladrie led the Bulldogs (16-7) with 11 points.

The victory was Muhlenberg’s first in districts since it beat Cedar Cliff in a Class 6A quarterfinal in 2021.

The state berth is the Muhls’ first since 2020, when they won the District 3 Class 5A championship.

Muhlenberg is in districts for the fifth straight season.
