Andre Weidman ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns and Hunter Mortimer passed for two scores as Ephrata beat visiting Muhlenberg 41-20 in a non-league football opener Saturday at War Memorial Field.
The Mountaineers won a season opener for the first time in 18 years and handed the Muhls their 18th consecutive defeat.
Ephrata built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind Weidman’s 9-yard touchdown run and Mortimer’s 83-yard pass to a wide-open Jeremiah Knowles.
Muhlenberg answered quickly when Aaron Shuker returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.
The Mounts added two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 27-7 halftime lead, the first coming on Weidman’s 4-yard run and the second when defensive tackle Deric Hoover recovered a Muhls fumble in the end zone.
Ephrata drove 71 yards to open the third quarter and scored on Weidman’s 22-yard run to make it 34-7. Shuker again responded, this time with a 64-yard touchdown run.
The Mounts increased the lead again with Mortimer’s second TD pass late in the third quarter, a 4-yarder to Clay Ringler.
Josh Dipini closed the scoring when he ran for a 16-yard TD in the fourth for Muhlenberg.
Sophomore Kyle Archie completed 9-of-11 passes for 90 yards in his first start for the Muhls.
