Music, food and fun at Muhlenberg’s Riverfest

Around noon on Saturday, Donna and Barry Weitzel were at the same place they had been the night before. And it’s where they planned to by Sunday, too.

The Muhlenberg Township couple were at Jim Dietrich Park, grabbing some food and drinks while listening to a little live music.

It’s the perfect way to spend a late summer weekend, they said, Which is why they make sure never to miss the annual Muhlenberg Township Riverfest.

“We like the entertainment and the food,” Donna Weitzel said. “And the beer.”

“That’s the number one thing, the beer” her husband chimed in.

Donna Weitzel said there are tons of great eating options at Riverfest, in particular Spuds Burgers, whose sign boasts that they have “the best burgers and fires in the world.”

“They do,” Barry Weitzel said.

Donna Weitzel said she’s also a big fan of spicy food and was eager to stop by a hot sauce stand.

“There’s just such a variety of food, you won’t go hungry,” she said.

Brothers Lance and Gary Weyandt said they also enjoy the wide variety of food at Riverfest. But that’s not the only reason they come.

“It’s the setting,” Lance Weyandt said, sitting at a picnic table overlooking the Schuylkill River while listening to a performance by Sydney Zepp. “We come to enjoy the setting and to run into friends.”

The Weyandt grew up and still live near Jim Dietrich Park in Muhlenberg, and have been to every single edition of Riverfest.

“It’s a great time if you like music and food,” Gary Weyandt said.

Caleb Wagner certainly does. With his fifth grade year at C.E. Cole Intermediate School starting on Monday, he was making sure to get a much last-minute fun in as possible on Saturday.

So far, he said, his favorite part of Riverfest was the giant slab of bacon on a stick he had eaten. But he was ready to give some other morsels a chance to dethrone it.

“I want to try all of it,” he said. “It all looks good and smells good.”

His dad, Brian Wagner, said it was his first time attending the event. He was quite impressed.

“It’s pretty laid back, it’s nice,” he said.

Like his son, Brian Wagner was diving head-first into delicious fare at the event. That includes sampling some hot sauce, downing the spiciest variety they had.

“I was regretting that for about 15 minutes,” he said with a laugh.

Riverfest continues Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For a complete list of performers and vendors visit muhlenbergtwp.com/196/RiverFest.
