Nether Providence native George Campbell is heading to Europe, sealing a transfer from CF Montreal to EFL Championship Club West Bromwich Albion on Friday.
Campbell, 24, is a defender who has been with Montreal since the 2023 season. He earned his first cap for the U.S. national team in January in a friendly against Venezuela. He plays primarily at center back.
Campbell signed a four-year deal with West Brom. The transfer fee was undisclosed.
“We’re happy to welcome George to the club,” WBA sporting director Andrew Nestor said in a press release. “At a relatively young age, George arrives with significant first-team experience. His progressive play, positional versatility and physicality adds to our defensive unit, further strengthening our options. He has been in season since February and can now join our pre-season at a critical time as we ramp up to our home opener.”
Campbell was born in Chester and started his youth career at Nether United.
Older brothers Rob and Will played at the Union Academy before college careers. The family moved to Georgia in 2013 when his dad, Garikai Campbell, became the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Morehouse College. Garikai had previously been a professor at Swarthmore College, where he wrestled in college.
George Campbell came up through Atlanta United’s system, debuting in 2020. He played 36 games over three MLS seasons before being dealt to Montreal in December 2022 in exchange for up to $900,000 in allocation money.
He played 70 games for Montreal with 61 starts, one goal and five assists. He’s logged more than 7,500 total minutes in MLS.
