New Berks Alert sign-up needed to continue receiving emergency messages

The wireless and online public alert system Berks County has been using, SwiftReach, is being discontinued by the manufacturer at the end of August.

Anyone interested in continuing to receive alerts will need to go online to www.berkspa.gov/911PublicAlert and enter the Everbridge site to create a new username and password. To create an account, a name, address and email address are required. A cellphone number for texts or calls is optional.

“Berks Alert is an effort by county government to notify residents and visitors in Berks County about hazardous conditions and other significant community events,” the county website states.

Alerts and announcements from local, state and federal government agencies, including the National Weather Service, are sent out.

Mobile Everbridge apps can be downloaded from Google Play for Android devices and Apple App Store for Apple devices.

From the Everbridge application description: “Messages range from emergencies and crime advisories to important announcements, reminders and community updates.”

Weather alert options are available and “quiet periods” can be set so no alerts will be delivered during that timeframe.
