Nonprofit thrift store opens in Hamburg

Our Town Foundation hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 12 at Thrift & Thrive, 14 S. Fourth St. in Hamburg, as part of the store’s grand opening and open house event. The event had a great turnout and support from the community.

Thrift & Thrive, Inc. is a nonprofit store dedicated to supporting local charities by offering high-quality women’s resale fashion. The store aims to provide affordable clothing while giving back to the community through its charitable initiatives.

Owner Bettina Schaeffer has been a friendly face in the local retail scene in downtown Hamburg.

Previously, she worked at New Life Thrift’s Hamburg store, and when the opportunity arose to take ownership of the shop, she embraced the chance to become a first-time business owner.

Schaeffer renovated and rebranded the store, giving it her own flair and making it a positive space for women and other community members. Her mission is to implement contemporary styles and trends to help women elevate their beauty and sense of who they truly are.

During the ceremony, Schaeffer said she is living the American dream.

She came to New York City in 1994 with plans to become a dancer. She has worked in sales, customer relations, a bakery and many shops. She became a waitress, receptionist, Pilates instructor, missionary and pastor’s wife.

“Today I am here as a testimony to Christ’s goodness as knowing Him opens doors I never envisioned possible!” Schaeffer said in her announcement of the store’s opening.

Thrift & Thrive has designated Keystone Military Families as its first local charity to support.

“I am thrilled to partner and support Keystone Military Families and their vision while working to become an intricate fixture right here in Hamburg, a town that I love,” Schaeffer said.

Officials at Our Town Foundation, Hamburg’s community revitalization nonprofit, said they are excited for this growth in town.

Our Town Foundation works to revitalize, promote and preserve downtown historic Hamburg for families and future generations to enjoy. Incorporated in 2003 as a nonprofit charitable organization, Our Town offers ribbon cuttings as a way to support local businesses.
