The United States tied Spain 1-1 in their second match in the women’s field hockey tournament Monday at the Paris Olympics.
The U.S. opened the tournament with a 4-1 loss against Argentina on Saturday. There are 12 teams in the tournament with six countries in a pool. The top four finishers in each advance pool advance to the quarterfinals.
The U.S. field hockey team members from Berks are Ashley Hoffman (Twin Valley), Kelee Lepage (Twin Valley), Phia Gladieux (Oley Valley), Karlee Kisha (Hamburg) and Meredith Sholder, who played at Emmaus but hails from Berks County.
Looking to get on the board in Pool B with a result, the Eagles took their first lead of the tournament late in the first quarter courtesy of the talent from Berks.
With 1:45 left, Hoffman made a strong save at the goal line, before hammering a deep pass down field toward Gladieux. After strong passing on the counter attacking run, Gladieux eventually corralled a loose ball in front of the net before striking a hard-hit shot for the goal.
Spain tied it up 20 minutes into the game with a goal by Begona Garcia and the score was tied 1-1 at the half.
The U.S.’s next match is Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. against Australia and will be shown on E!
