Pedestrian struck by vehicle on western Berks sidewalk

A pedestrian on a sidewalk was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured Friday afternoon in Wernersville, South Heidelberg Township police said.

The accident took place at 1:06 p.m. in the 100 block of West Penn Avenue.

Police gave this account:

A westbound vehicle veered into oncoming traffic lanes and onto the sidewalk, striking a pedestrian.

The victim, whom police did not identify, suffered major injuries and was reported to be in stable condition while being treated in an area hospital. The victim received immediate care at the scene from Western Berks Fire/EMS personnel and South Heidelberg police.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation conducted by South Heidelberg police and the Pennsylvania State Police accident reconstruction team.
