Junior Aidan Curley stroked a run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth inning and senior Trey Stricker tossed a two-hitter as Berks Catholic defeated Hughesville 1-0 in the first round of the PIAA Class 3A baseball playoffs on Monday.
The Saints (19-7) advance to the quarterfinals to play the winner of Notre Dame-Green Pond and Philadelphia Academy. That game will be Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
Curley’s single scored courtesy runner Giovanni DiSabatino, who stole second to move into scoring position.
After Curley’s hit, Berks Catholic loaded the bases with no outs but couldn’t get across a second run.
Stricker then held Hughesville, the District 4 runner-up, scoreless in the top of the seventh.
Stricker struck out 6 and gave up just one walk in seven innings. He threw 93 pitches, 59 for strikes.
Berks Catholic, the District 3 champions, had just four hits with Stricker, Mikey Fidler and Owen Schalk also getting singles.
Notre Dame-Green Pond was the District 11 champion and Philadelphia Academy was the District 12 runner-up.
